Burkina Faso Secures $17.9 Million Loan to Strengthen Sahel Road Link

  • The government approved a CFA10 billion ($17.9 million) BOAD loan for the Yargo–Bourzanga road segment.
  • The 96-kilometer stretch links the Centre-North and Sahel regions.
  • The project forms part of broader efforts to expand and modernize national road infrastructure.

Burkina Faso’s government, meeting in Council of Ministers on February 19 approved a CFA10 billion loan, or about $17.9 million, to finance the Yargo–Bourzanga section of National Road No. 22 (RN22), which connects Kongoussi to Djibo.

The financing is provided by the West African Development Bank (BOAD), whose board had already cleared the facility in December 2025. The 96-kilometer segment is described as strategic for national connectivity, linking the Centre-North and Sahel regions at a time of persistent logistical and security constraints.

Authorities say paving the road, along with the construction of a toll station, should ease the movement of people and goods. The project also aims to reduce the isolation of certain localities, in line with a broader plan to connect regional capitals through major road corridors.

That strategy includes the ongoing construction of the Ouagadougou–Bobo-Dioulasso highway and the upgrade of the Koudougou–Yako project into a dual two-lane expressway, after it was initially designed as a standard road.

Implementation remains a key challenge. Meeting contractual deadlines, controlling cost overruns, ensuring construction quality and maintaining infrastructure will determine the project’s long-term impact on economic growth and territorial integration.
