German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier began a two-day state visit to Ghana on Monday, marking his second trip to the West African nation since December 2017.
According to the Ghana News Agency, the visit’s agenda includes a private meeting with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, followed by bilateral discussions focusing on trade, investment, technology, and development cooperation.
Steinmeier is also scheduled to meet with young professionals from the information technology sector. On Tuesday, November 4, he will travel to Kumasi for the groundbreaking ceremony at the Kumasi Technical Institute, a visit to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and its Collaborative Research Centre, and a courtesy call to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace.
German-Ghanaian relations have strengthened over the years around key strategic areas, notably energy, governance, and vocational training. In 2019, the two nations signed a $5.7 million funding agreement for the construction of a 400 kW biomass power plant aimed at improving solid waste management in Ghana.
In 2021, the countries concluded a $23 million (€20 million) grant agreement to enhance technical cooperation in the agri-food, renewable energy, and energy efficiency sectors. Bilateral trade between Germany and Ghana reached $678.1 million in 2024, up from $528.8 million in 2023, according to International Trade Centre data.
The German President’s presence in Ghana is part of a broader diplomatic tour spanning North and Sub-Saharan Africa. The tour began in Egypt on November 1, 2025, and is scheduled to conclude on November 7 in Angola.
