• President Faye reshuffles cabinet to accelerate national reforms
• Cheikh Niang, Yassine Fall, Cissé get key ministerial roles
• Sonko calls for disciplined, round-the-clock government action
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has reshuffled Senegal's government, making three key changes aimed at accelerating reforms and tackling pressing national challenges.
In a decree signed by Faye on Saturday, veteran diplomat Cheikh Niang was appointed as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, replacing Yassine Fall, who will now lead the Ministry of Justice. The Interior Ministry is now headed by Mouhamadou Bamba Cissé, a lawyer and close associate of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.
Sonko, in a televised address announcing the changes, said the shake-up was not merely a technical adjustment but a strategic decision to expedite ongoing reforms. He emphasized the need for a more disciplined and resolute administration.
The newly appointed ministers face significant challenges. Senegal's diplomacy is tasked with navigating a turbulent regional landscape marked by recent coups and tensions. The Justice Ministry, according to Sonko, must reconcile with the population.
"This will not be a government of leisure but of commitment and struggle," Sonko warned. "We will be uncompromising and very demanding. It will be necessary to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
The reshuffle is intended to streamline government action in line with Faye's broader agenda. The president, who also dissolved the previous opposition-dominated parliament and called for new legislative elections in November, is pushing for his economic recovery plan, "Jubbanti Koom," to move forward.
