Germany will provide €49 million (about $56.7 million) in funding to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The announcement followed bilateral development cooperation talks held on November 4–5, 2025, at the ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
The funding aims to support regional initiatives in peace, security, good governance, sustainable economic development, and public health. Both parties also reviewed recent achievements and set priorities for 2025–2026, focusing on energy and climate transition, regional economic integration, and pandemic prevention.
“Through equitable partnerships, we are working towards deeper integration and enhanced peace and security, with the ultimate goal of building an inclusive, resilient, and prosperous region,” said ECOWAS Commission Vice President Damtien L. Tchintchibidja, stressing that the ECOWAS-Germany partnership has made significant progress in recent years.
Security and health systems in West Africa remain fragile, with limited infrastructure and access to essential services. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), public spending on social protection in the region averages less than 1% of GDP.
The new funding continues Germany’s long-standing support to ECOWAS, which dates back to 1985. In September 2023, Berlin committed €80.7 million to strengthen the organization’s development programs over two years.
This latest package adds to Germany’s total portfolio of about €494 million already dedicated to bilateral projects within the ECOWAS community.
