Côte d’Ivoire Terminal officialy launches activities of the new container terminal in the port of Abidjan

(BOLLORE ) - On 2 November 2022, in the presence of the port authorities, Côte d'Ivoire Terminal officially launched the commercial activities of the new container terminal of the port of Abidjan, with the arrival of the CMA CGM ROSSINI vessel, measuring 267 m long and 40 m wide, and transporting 5770 TEU containers. The launch of the activities of the second terminal comes after successful tests in mid-October 2022.

This project was carried out thanks to an overall investment of 596 billion CFA francs, of which 334 billion CFA francs were dedicated to earthworks payable by the Port of Abidjan and 262 billion CFA francs to superstructure. Covering an area of 37.5 hectares, this new terminal has a 1100 m quay with a 16 m draught and modern equipment enabling it to handle 1.5 million TEU containers per year. Its commissioning will increase trade between Côte d'Ivoire and the sub-region and strengthen the Côte d'Ivoire/Burkina Faso/Mali corridor.

“The official launch of Côte d'Ivoire Terminal's activities marks the beginning of a new phase. For two years, we have been working to build this new container terminal in order to provide the Port of Abidjan with an infrastructure that meets international standards and is capable of supporting the growth of traffic while preserving the environment," said Koen De Backker, Managing Director of Côte d'Ivoire Terminal.

This new infrastructure introduces several innovations, including automated gate management and an online appointment system, to facilitate the delivery and collection of containers in a timely and secure manner.

“We are proud of the completion of this major project, which will contribute to the long-term repositioning of the Port of Abidjan as a key logistics platform on the West African coast. I would like to congratulate the teams of the Autonomous Port of Abidjan and Côte d'Ivoire Terminal for having worked together to achieve this.” said Hien Yacouba Sié, Managing Director of the Autonomous Port of Abidjan.

The commissioning of Côte d'Ivoire Terminal reflects the commitment made by the terminal to increase volumes and boost import and export flows in Côte d'Ivoire and West Africa. This new infrastructure encompasses all the latest innovations and perfectly showcases our commitment to the development of port activities in Africa.” said Olivier de Noray, Ports and Terminals Managing Director of Bolloré Ports.

Côte d’Ivoire Terminal will also be one of the next terminals to obtain the Bolloré Ports Green Terminal label from Bureau Veritas1, which is a guarantee of energy and environmental performance.

About Côte d'Ivoire Terminal

Following an international call for tenders, the Bolloré Ports and APM Terminals consortium was awarded the contract to build and manage the second container terminal at the Port of Abidjan. Thanks to an investment of more than 262 billion CFA francs, construction work on the future terminal will be completed at the end of 2022. With an area of 37.5 hectares, it will be equipped to handle more than 1.5 million TEU containers per year and will accommodate vessels with draughts of up to 16 metres along 1,100 metres of quays. The project will also generate 450 direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs. It will contribute to skill development and to training for young Ivorian people in port operations.
