The National Information Technology Authority of Uganda (NITA-U) wants to increase the number of free wireless internet access points from 284 to 500 in the six coming months. Currently, these points are located in Kampala, Wakiso and Entebbe.
According to Steven Kivenga, marketing officer at NITA-U, the priority zones remain rural areas where the national backbone has not been deployed yet.
The NITA-U explains that the saturation problems it experienced in the past have been resolved. It indicates that its platform has been reorganized to accommodate any number of users.
From Monday to Friday, free internet will be offered to users from 6 PM to 6 AM and between 3 PM and 6 AM during weekends. To avoid misuse, services like VOIP, app updates, video streamings, torrents and porn websites are blocked.
