Friday, 07 August 2015 09:44

The government of Cameroon has launched its own subsea fiber optic cable network on 4 August 2015. The infrastructure named Nigeria-Cameroon Submarine Cable System (NCSCS) will link the city of Kribi, in the Southern region, to Lagos in Nigeria. During the ceremony marking the launch of the installation site of this telecom infrastructure, Jean Pierre Biyiti bi Essam, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, explained that the initiative will fulfil the Cameroonian government's desire to supply its populations with services of quality at affordable prices.‬

NCSCS which will be about 1100 km long should be completed by the end of the year. It will provide a broadband capacity of 12.8 Tbps between the two countries. According to Jean Pierre Biyiti bi Essam, NCSCS is part of the strategic plan for the national broadband network started since 2011 by Cameroon. The implementation of NCSCS will enable significant improvement in the development of e-government, e-commerce, e-education, e-health, etc.

According to David Nkoto Emane, Managing Director of Cameroon Telecommunications Corporation (CAMTEL), the company managing NCSCS, “the cable system will also be used to strengthen the position of Cameroon as the main hub of bandwidth in the region and abroad”. Huawei Marine is in charge of deploying NCSCS.
