Morocco exported 58,000 tons of avocados during the 2025/2026 marketing season, a sharp drop from the previous year, according to Abdellah El Yamlahi, head of the Moroccan Avocado Association (MAVA).
In an interview published March 20 by FreshPlaza, El Yamlahi said the figure marks a decline of more than 48% from the 112,000 tons shipped in the prior campaign, based on data from Morocco’s foreign exchange office compiled by EastFruit.
The announcement also confirms that the export season ended earlier than usual. Morocco’s avocado campaign typically runs from September through May.
Adverse weather played a central role in the downturn. Heat waves at the start of the season, followed by flooding and strong winds later on, caused significant crop losses. El Yamlahi said output fell by close to 50% compared with initial production forecasts, sharply reducing exportable volumes.
Logistical issues compounded the impact. Port closures linked to bad weather, limited transport capacity, and long shipping delays disrupted exports and affected fruit quality toward the end of the season.
“The lack of volume made the export campaign very difficult and unusual. Prices stayed high throughout the season, which complicated marketing,” El Yamlahi said.
The drop in shipments is likely to weigh on foreign exchange earnings for the sector, after exports generated more than $300 million in the 2024/2025 campaign, according to EastFruit data.
The key challenge for the next season will be to revive the sector while managing its exposure to increasingly volatile weather conditions.
