Burkina Faso on Tuesday launched the pilot phase of a national video-based traffic enforcement system aimed at improving road safety amid persistent traffic violations.
The launch ceremony was attended by Security Minister Mahamadou Sana, Digital Transition Minister Aminata Zerbo/Sabané and Budget Delegate Minister Fatoumata Bako/Traoré.
According to Zakaria Hébié, director general of transmissions and information technology at the Ministry of Security, the system uses high-definition cameras combined with artificial intelligence to automatically detect offences, identify license plates and vehicle owners, and send alerts via SMS.
The system is also designed to integrate with several national databases, including those of the Directorate General of Land and Maritime Transport (DGTTM), the e-Contravention platform and Faso Arzêka, the national digital payments platform.
"Beyond the technology, this system marks a genuine paradigm shift. It ensures fair enforcement, reduces disputes and improves transparency, while helping to curb roadside hassles," Sana said.
The initiative comes as authorities say poor driving behaviour remains a major cause of accidents and congestion despite ongoing efforts by security forces. The National Brigade of Firefighters (BNSP) recorded 15,614 accidents in 2025, leading to 20,617 medical evacuations and 345 deaths. In 2024, it recorded 13,369 accident-related interventions, including 222 deaths.
The pilot phase will test the system's reliability, refine operational procedures and collect feedback from users. It will also include a public awareness campaign to win public support. According to Sana, a full rollout is expected to improve road safety, strengthen civic-mindedness, reduce corruption, boost state revenues and generate more reliable traffic data.
