Cassava and Rockefeller Foundation partner to boost AI adoption in Africa
Local high-performance computing access extended to eight African countries
Initiative targets AI solutions in agriculture, health, and education sectors
Cassava Technologies and the Rockefeller Foundation announced a partnership on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, to speed up the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) across Africa.
The initiative uses Cassava’s computing infrastructure to give African organizations local access to high-performance computing power, a resource that has long been scarce on the continent.
“AI presents Africa with one of the best opportunities to drive economic development and access to economic opportunity for the continent’s youth,” said Hardy Pemhiwa, President and Group CEO of Cassava Technologies. “This requires investment in ensuring that AI developers across Africa have the resources and platforms to create solutions to Africa’s unique challenges.”
Pemhiwa said Cassava was pleased to partner with the Rockefeller Foundation to make locally hosted computing power available to Africa’s AI ecosystem.
The partnership will allow Rockefeller Foundation-supported organizations in eight countries, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe, to use Cassava’s graphics processing units (GPUs). This access is intended to support the development and deployment of AI applications tailored to local contexts, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, health, and education.
By improving access to local computing resources, Cassava and the Rockefeller Foundation aim to reduce costs, strengthen technological sovereignty, and accelerate the development of homegrown solutions to African challenges.
