  • Ghana to allocate $2.8B in 2026 budget for major road infrastructure push

  • Funding targets rural, regional, and cross-border connectivity under Big Push plan

  • Roads carry 90% of traffic; rail remains limited despite ongoing revival efforts

Ghana’s Ministry of Finance plans to set aside 30.8 billion cedis, about 2.8 billion dollars, in the 2026 budget to support the road segment of the government’s Big Push infrastructure program. Local media said President John Mahama announced the plan on Tuesday, November 11, during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Wa-Tumu-Han road project in Guli in the Upper West Region.

The allocation is more than twice the 13.8 billion cedis provided in the 2025 budget. The new funding will focus on building and rehabilitating major arterial, regional and rural roads, as well as developing strategic cross-border corridors. The government says priority will be given to improving connectivity in landlocked areas to support the movement of people and goods.

Roads remain the backbone of Ghana’s transport system and carry more than 90 percent of all passenger and freight traffic. The rail network plays only a minor role after decades of underinvestment and infrastructure decline, though efforts are underway to restore it.

The Big Push program aims to invest nearly 10 billion dollars in national infrastructure, with roads accounting for a major share of the planned spending.
