• Germany grants $65M to UNICEF, WFP for South Sudan resilience
• Aid to support health, education, protection, and food security
• Nearly 1 million people targeted amid worsening national crisis
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have received a $65 million grant from Germany to enhance community resilience in South Sudan. The funding, announced in a UN statement on Thursday, August 28, is expected to benefit nearly one million people.
The German contribution will be used to improve several services, including healthcare, livelihoods, water, sanitation, and hygiene. It will also support child protection and gender-based violence prevention. Additionally, the funds will be used to bolster education, which includes renovating classrooms and providing daily school meals.
"This support is not just aid – it is an investment in lasting resilience, food security, and dignity of the people we serve," said Adham Effendi, WFP's acting representative and country director for South Sudan.
The new funding comes as the political and security situation in South Sudan continues to worsen, according to the UN, negatively impacting livelihoods, security, and health. UNICEF estimates that about 9.3 million people—nearly 70% of the country's 13.4 million population—are in need of humanitarian assistance.
The financial aid is part of the second phase of a joint resilience project in South Sudan, targeting urban and peri-urban areas in Juba, Torit, Yambio, and Aweil. Since 2019, Germany's total financial commitment to the project is estimated at over $120 million.
