Burkina Faso: ECOWAS proposes return of President Kafando and pardon for the putschists

Monday, 21 September 2015 13:26

ECOWAS President Kadré Désiré Ouedraogo (photo) presented the draft agreement meant to help re-establish constitutional order in Burkina Faso, 4 days after the military coup.

Ce projet prévoit la restauration des institutions de la transition et du prédisent Kafando ainsi qu’un pardon aux putschistes, sanctionné par une loi d’amnistie qui devrait être votée avant la fin de ce mois.

This draft makes provision for the restoration of transitional institutions and President Kafando as well as pardoning the putschists, through an amnesty law to be voted prior to the end of the month.

The election process would return to normal, but candidates who had been excluded for supporting the revision of the constitution in favour of Mr. Compaoré would finally be allowed to take part in the election. The polling day would be postponed, but no later than 22 November.

The French president currently visiting Morocco said that he is fully supporting the mediation effort from ECOWAS: “I am warning those who may want to oppose it” he cautioned, thus adding the weight of France to tip the scale in favour of this draft.
