The Malian government has approved a decree granting a 50-hectare plot of land in the commune of Kokofata to the Compagnie Malienne pour le Développement des Textiles (CMDT) for the construction of a new cotton ginning plant. The decision was announced on October 15 following a Cabinet meeting.
According to authorities, the plant will support the development of cotton-growing areas and improve farmers’ living standards. Details on the project’s cost, schedule, and processing capacity have not yet been disclosed. However, the initiative reflects the government’s goal to expand the country’s fiber production capacity.
CMDT currently operates 18 cotton ginning plants nationwide, with a combined processing capacity of 4,300 tons per day. Mali still exports nearly all of its cotton fiber output, which generated around $69.7 million in export revenues in 2024, according to Trade Map data. For the ongoing 2025/2026 season, authorities expect a harvest of 282,000 tons of seed cotton.
