Kenya has signed an agreement with Malaysia allowing duty-free shipments of agricultural products to the Asian nation.
The deal was concluded during a meeting on Monday in Nairobi between Kenyan President William Ruto and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The partnership, reported by local media, is seen as a major step in strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The deal followed a meeting in Nairobi between Kenyan President William Ruto and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The partnership, reported by local media, is seen as a major step in strengthening bilateral cooperation, authorities said.
"The removal of these tariffs is especially significant given the structure of our current trade, where Kenya’s main exports to Malaysia include tea, coffee, flowers, avocados, and titanium ores," President Ruto said.
A United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) report published in July estimated that Malaysia imported an average of $21.7 billion worth of food products annually between 2021 and 2023. Key import items included cereals, dairy products, beef, and fruits such as citrus.
The duty-free access to the Malaysian agricultural market also offers Kenya an opportunity to increase export revenues from the agricultural sector. Data compiled by the Kenyan central bank shows the East African nation earned nearly $3 billion from its agricultural and food shipments during the 2024/2025 fiscal year.
