Zimbabwe has launched a pilot program for digital land titles, marking a new phase in its land reform efforts to strengthen legal certainty around property ownership.
The initiative centers on a digital platform designed to manage land titles. Existing physical documents will be digitized after verification by authorized professionals. The pilot phase will test the technical and legal mechanisms before a national rollout.
According to local media reports, the pilot program began on April 1, 2026, will run for two weeks, and is intended to test and refine the operational processes of the Digital Land Administration Platform (DLAP) ahead of its national implementation.
Through the project, authorities aim to address several structural challenges. The current system, which relies heavily on paper records, remains vulnerable to fraud, document loss and disputes. By introducing centralized digital registries, the government aims to improve transaction traceability, reduce fraud and strengthen property rights protections.
Eventually, title holders will be required to digitize their documents. Zimbabwe joins other African countries that have pursued similar reforms, including Nigeria, Senegal, Algeria and Tunisia, reflecting a broader continental shift toward digital land registries.
