Kenyan President William Ruto has urged the country’s universities to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) in their teaching and research. He said higher education must take the lead in developing the advanced digital skills needed in the modern economy.
Ruto delivered the remarks on Monday, November 17, while granting a charter to Gretsa University in Nairobi.

“I urge all universities to integrate AI into their teaching, research, and institutional operations. I commend the Ministry of Education for developing a national ODeL policy that will guide structured, high-quality online learning across our universities,” he said.
The move supports the National AI Strategy launched in May, which aims to equip young professionals for a rapidly evolving job market and position Kenya as a key player in Africa’s digital economy.
Ruto added that universities must strengthen the link between theory and practical training so graduates can become entrepreneurs, innovators and major contributors to Kenya’s industrialization and economic growth.
The government is also encouraging institutions to modernize their teaching approaches by adopting AI-powered tools, advanced programming courses and data-driven learning platforms.
Kenyan students are currently benefiting from a Google program that offers free access to Google AI Pro in eight African countries.
