Botswana aims to build a modern and competitive economy anchored in digital services. The government invested in critical infrastructure to support its long-term technological transformation.
Authorities announced on Tuesday, 25 November, the inauguration of the Digital Delta Data Centre (DDDC), the country’s first national data facility. Officials present the site as a central pillar for strengthening digital sovereignty and supporting the expansion of the digital economy.
Minister of State Moeti Ceaser Mohwasa said, “The Digital Delta Data Centre is not just infrastructure, it is the foundation of our nation’s digital economy, which protects our data and fosters innovation for generations to come.”
Botswana designed the DDDC as a reference platform for hosting, managing and securing public and private data. The centre received Tier III certification from Uptime Institute, an international standard that guarantees operational continuity even during maintenance.
Authorities say the new capacity will accelerate key sectors such as fintech, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and online administrative services. Mohwasa added, “Data is a strategic asset. […] This centre ensures that Botswana remains in control of its digital future.”
The enactment of the Data Protection Act 2024 reinforces the strategic value of the DDDC. The government says the facility ensures that Botswana’s data is stored, processed and protected within national borders, in line with the new regulatory framework.
