Gabon has awarded a contract to build 250 km (155 miles) of roads in its northern Woleu-Ntem province to China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), aiming to boost trade and development in the resource-rich region.
The project covers two key sections, Medouneu-Oyem and Minvoul-Bitam, to improve the movement of people and goods in Woleu-Ntem, a province bordering Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo.
The cost and completion timeline have not yet been disclosed. The initiative aims to unlock the region’s economic potential, long constrained by poor infrastructure.
Agriculture dominates the province’s economy, with exports such as rubber, coffee, and cocoa, and staples including bananas, cassava, and taro. The area also contains major mineral deposits, including iron ore and gold.
Better roads are expected to ease the transport of locally produced goods to cities, attract agro-industrial investment, and strengthen cross-border trade with neighboring countries.
