  • $600M project boosts mineral exports, container cargo handling
  • Part of regional logistics push linking DRC, Zambia to Atlantic

Angola's Ministry of Transport has announced the upcoming reopening of the Sacomar mining terminal and the container terminal at the commercial port of Moçâmedes, located in the southwestern Namibe province. The modernization of these facilities, led by the Toyota Tsusho consortium, aims to boost mineral exports and the handling of containerized cargo.

This effort is part of a larger, nearly $600 million project to expand and modernize the Sacomar port, which aligns with regional ambitions to develop an integrated logistics chain in the Southeast Atlantic basin. The mining terminal features a 520-meter-long, 18-meter-wide pier capable of accommodating vessels with up to 250,000 tons of capacity and handling up to 10 million tons of ore annually.

The Moçâmedes province holds significant reserves of copper, manganese, chromium, tin, and lignite. According to local authorities, the port's modernization will stimulate the local and national economy by providing improved logistical support to the extractive industry. It also comes as Angola is positioning itself as a key transit point for critical mineral shipments from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia, two major players in the global copper and cobalt markets.

To build an integrated logistics chain for these vital resources, the United States and the European Union have announced massive investments in the development of related infrastructure, such as railways and roads.
