Tata Advanced Systems has launched a plant near Casablanca to produce Whap 8x8 armored vehicles for the Moroccan army and African export markets. The factory will use 35% locally made components from the outset, supporting Morocco’s strategy to strengthen its domestic defense industry.
The vehicles, equipped with armored wheels, are designed to enhance survivability, improve off-road performance, and deliver greater combat effectiveness.
The project is part of Morocco’s broader plan to reduce reliance on military imports and boost local production, supported by legislation adopted in June to promote domestic manufacturing. It follows a bilateral agreement with India covering training, cybersecurity, military health, and industrial cooperation.
Tata’s choice of Morocco builds on its African experience, including its revived automotive operations in South Africa to compete with Chinese imports. This background helps the company adapt to local requirements and gradually integrate Moroccan-made components.
With one of the continent’s largest defense budgets, Morocco aims to secure its own supply of armored vehicles and position itself as a regional exporter. For Tata, the plant highlights growing Indian interest in Africa’s defense and automotive sectors, tapping into an expanding market and leveraging expertise gained elsewhere on the continent.
If the plant meets its localization and export targets, it could serve as a hub for Africa, deepen Morocco-India defense ties, and attract new industrial investments across the region.
