French multinational Alstom announced, Sept. 25, it secured a contract for railway signaling and safety equipment in Morocco with a consortium that includes Ineo Rail and IneoIum. The project, valued at approximately 260 million euros (about $304 million), covers high-speed lines between Kenitra and Settat, with the French equipment supplier’s share totaling 150 million euros.
Alstom will supply its Onvia Control system, which is based on ERTMS Level 1 technology. This system is intended to enhance security, punctuality, and capacity management on the lines. Ineo Rail and IneoIum will be responsible for telecommunications, cabling, and power supply installations. The new infrastructure will help streamline rail traffic while simultaneously reducing the carbon footprint of Morocco's national network.
The work on the Kenitra-Settat section is part of Morocco 2040 Rail Plan, an ambitious national plan to extend and modernize the network. The goal is to improve connectivity among major cities and strengthen the integration of rural and regional areas. Ultimately, the program aims to increase the percentage of the population served by the high-speed rail network to 87%, up from the current 51%.
Beyond improving access, the project is designed to stimulate economic growth by facilitating access to the country's main industrial and agricultural hubs.
