The Cameroonian government submitted a bill to parliament on Monday, November 10, seeking authorization for the president to ratify the Air Transport Agreement with Qatar, which was signed in Doha on January 16, 2025. The deal aims to allow Qatar Airways to operate flights to Cameroon and tap into the resulting economic benefits.
According to the explanatory memorandum, the ratification is expected to “strengthen Cameroon’s air transport network by improving connectivity with the Middle East and Asia, lower travel costs through increased competition, attract more foreign airlines, particularly Qatar Airways, and boost tax and fee revenues for the state.” The Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority and Airports of Cameroon are also expected to benefit from the agreement’s implementation.
The government anticipates that the agreement’s approval will enhance the appeal of Douala and Yaoundé airports, which “should see higher passenger and cargo traffic.” Qatar Airways’ entry into the market is also expected to “raise Cameroon’s profile among tourists and investors from the Middle East, Asia, the Americas, and Europe,” supporting tourism and foreign investment.
Qatar Airways, recognized for its large fleet, global network of more than 170 destinations, and service quality, would give Cameroon broader access to international markets.
By partnering with a leading international airline, Cameroon aims to make air travel to the country more affordable, increase passenger and cargo volumes, and expand the aviation sector’s tax base. However, the long-term success of this partnership will depend on Cameroon’s ability to harmonize airport fees, improve services, and strengthen domestic connectivity to ensure lasting benefits.
