Kakum National Park is a protected area located in Ghana’s Central Region, near the city of Cape Coast. Established as a forest reserve in 1931 and designated a national park in 1992, it covers an area of approximately 375 square kilometers. The park consists of a lowland tropical rainforest, typical of the Guinean forest zone of West Africa.
Kakum is known for its rich biodiversity. It is home to a variety of wildlife, including endangered species such as the bongo, a large forest antelope, the yellow-backed duiker, and several types of primates including the black-and-white colobus monkey. The park is also a popular birdwatching destination, with more than 250 recorded bird species. The flora is equally diverse, including endemic and medicinal plants.
One of the park’s most iconic features is its canopy walkway. Stretching over 300 meters and suspended about 30 meters above the ground, it offers visitors a chance to explore the forest from the treetop level, providing a unique view of the ecosystem. This canopy walkway is one of the few of its kind in West Africa.
The park’s management actively involves local communities, who benefit from tourism through employment opportunities and the development of crafts and agriculture. This community-based conservation approach aims to curb deforestation and protect natural habitats.
Kakum also serves an educational purpose, hosting programs for schools and visitors to raise environmental awareness. Interpretive centers and trained guides lead tours, offering insights into the forest’s ecology and wildlife. The park thus functions as a place of nature conservation, local development, and environmental education.
