• South Sudan initiates a $58 million, four-year project to transform basic education nationwide.
• The program aims to directly benefit over 300,000 students and indirectly reach 600,000 others, focusing on girls and marginalized groups.
• The initiative is supported by the Ministry of General Education, GPE, UNICEF, and other international partners.
South Sudan launched on July 2 a $58 million education project over four years aimed at transforming basic education in the country.
The project will expand access to quality and inclusive education and improve learning outcomes for children, especially girls and marginalized groups. It will be implemented by the Ministry of General Education and Instruction (MoGEI), in partnership with international organizations including the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and UNICEF.
“The Government of South Sudan is fully committed to ensuring that all children can obtain a quality education. This funding from GPE will provide life-saving educational opportunities for hundreds of thousands of crisis-affected girls and boys across the country.” said Dr. Kuyok Abol Kuyok, Minister of Education.
This project comes as more than 2.8 million school-age children remain out of school due to ongoing insecurity, limited access to education, poverty, and a lack of quality in the education system.
To address this, the Ministry of Education organized a policy dialogue in Juba in June 2023, in collaboration with the UNESCO office and the International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IIRCA).
This program will directly benefit more than 300,000 students and indirectly reach 600,000 others in 20 counties, including some of the most affected areas.
