(Ecofin Agency) - The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) hopes to obtain compensation of USD 21.622 billion from polluting countries, during the next COP 21. This amount according to official sources is meant to put the important forest area of this country, the second largest in the world, to use in the fight against global warming.

This participation necessitates, according to Congolese experts, technical and sizeable financial assistance. Thus, USD 12.54 billion will be used to implement the mitigating measures in the sectors of agriculture, forestry and energy. Agricultural settlement, development of intensive farming and agribusiness, improvement of the fuel-wood and hydro-electric sectors are some of the measures to be taken. The remaining USD 9.08 billion will be used to implement adjustment measures.

On the eve of the COP 21 conference, when only 59 countries out of the 187 expected have submitted their contribution proposals, DRC is the 6th African country to have announced its pledges. It remains to be seen whether it will get the necessary funding, according to its government, to implement these measures.
