Ghana’s government has launched a $200 million initiative to finance the installation of rooftop solar systems nationwide. According to Ghana News Agency on October 28, the program will install around 4,000 photovoltaic systems with a combined capacity of 137 MW.
The project is part of a bilateral agreement with Switzerland, supported by both public and private financing. It will be implemented through the Ministry of Energy and the Energy Commission, which are leading the call for applications from residential and commercial building owners with suitable rooftops.
The installations will be carried out by certified companies and co-financed by private investors to complement public funding. According to local media citing the Ministry of Energy, $60 million will come from a private-sector partner, while up to $140 million will be mobilized through the program.
The main objective is to ease pressure on the national power grid during peak demand hours and reduce reliance on diesel generators and imported fossil fuels. The Energy Commission reported that in 2024, electricity demand peaked above 3,900 MW. The program also supports Ghana’s goal to diversify its energy mix and strengthen supply reliability.
The initiative aligns with the government’s emission reduction commitments under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), approved by the Paris Agreement Secretariat in 2023.
