TikTok is tightening its monitoring systems across Africa as part of a wider push to curb harmful or non-compliant content. The company’s latest Community Guidelines Enforcement Report shows that between April and June 2025, 592,037 videos were removed from Kenya alone for violating community standards. About 92.9% of these were taken down before being viewed, and 96.3% within 24 hours of posting. Earlier quarters saw 450,000 and 360,000 removals respectively — a clear sign of TikTok’s growing vigilance in the country.
The Chinese-owned platform attributes this surge to stronger automated moderation tools, improved reporting systems, and a more localised approach to content management. Kenya, one of Africa’s fastest-growing digital markets, has become a focal point in TikTok’s efforts to maintain platform integrity amid rising concerns over misinformation, nudity, and hate speech.
Similar enforcement trends are visible in other African countries. In South Africa, TikTok removed over 420,000 videos in the same quarter, while Nigeria recorded around 310,000 takedowns. Across the continent, the GSMA — the global association representing mobile operators — estimates that over 520 million Africans will be online by the end of 2025, a figure that continues to challenge content regulation and safety monitoring.
Globally, TikTok reported deleting 169 million videos in the second quarter of 2025, representing about 1.3% of all uploads worldwide. The company says 99.3% of these were removed proactively before any user report, showing that Africa’s growing removals are part of a broader global compliance trend aimed at reinforcing trust and safety on the platform.
